Welcome to the Applicant Portal. Through this portal, the user can start an application, complete a draft application,
view the status of an application, submit supplemental information to an existing application, submit a registration or view past registration.
A USPTO.gov account is required.
You are required to create a new USPTO.gov account or login to your existing USPTO.gov account.
My Applicant Page: the bottom half of the page displays applications previously submitted to OED using the Applicant Portal.
Please note that paper applications submitted to OED will not be available online.
The top half of the page displays a draft application. You may not initiate more than one draft application at the same time.
You have 90 days to complete a draft application and submit to OED. Draft applications not submitted within 90 days will be permanently
deleted from the portal.
You may click on "Application to Practice" or "Draft Application" to print or download the PTO-158 form and additional documents
uploaded with your application.
Please note that there are many ways to navigate through the system. You may save the application as draft at any point.
However, in order to click the 'Continue' button you must complete all required fields for the current page.
Once the required fields are completed, you may use the vertical, horizontal, or bottom navigations to move to any page.
After uploading all the required documents, you navigate to the Review and Sign Your Application page.
Please review the summary of Form PTO-158 displayed at the top of page and scroll to the bottom of the page and enter a signature.
Please note that original documents, such as a certificate of good standing or transcript, must be mailed to OED within 21 days
of submitting an online application.
Next, you can select the 'Pay Now' button at the bottom of the page to complete the submission.
My Registration Page will be enable for applicants who applied online and were approved to be registered in writing by OED.
The applicant portal will guide you through the process of completing the Data Sheet Form, Oath or Affirmation Form, and paying
the registration fee required.
You may not initiate more than one draft registration at the time.
You have 90 days to complete a draft registration and submit to OED. Draft registrations not submitted within 90 days will be permanently
deleted from the portal.
To start the registration process; select Registration in the drop down menu
Next, enter the required information on the Review and Verify Your Information screen.
Required fields are marked with an asterisk.
If you are registering as an Attorney, you will be required to select the states in which you are a member in good standing of the bar
of the highest court of the State. You will have 21 days to mail an original certificate of good standing issued within the past six months.
Click 'Submit' once the state selection has been made.
To continue click the 'Oath or declaration' button.
Review and agree to the Oath or declaration.
You may also upload optional/additional documentation with your registration.
After uploading all the required and/or optional documents, you will navigate to the Review and Sign Your Registration page.
You should review the summary of Form PTO-107A (Data Sheet) displayed at the top of page and then scroll to the bottom of the page
and enter a signature.
Next, you can select the 'Pay Now' button at the bottom of the page to complete the submission.
You will be directed to the next screen to pay the Registration Fee.
After payment has been successfully submitted; a payment confirmation number will be displayed for reference. You may download the pdf receipt.
To review your submission select 'Registration to Practice' under My Registration.
The Request page lists the request types and any fee associated with each request. The request tab will become visible once OED has processed an application.
A single request may be selected before submitting the request for processing.
The user initiates a request by selecting an option button to the left of the request type and selecting the ‘Start Request’ button.
NOTE: An Extension of Exam Window is available to applicants who have an open and unexpired exam eligibility window.
A new page is displayed for the request type chosen which contains the entry fields and/or form(s) that the user must populate in order to process
the request. There is a 'Back', and 'Cancel request' button at the bottom of each page to navigate between the pages.
NOTE: All required fields on an Applicant Request page must be populated before selecting the ‘Continue’ button, or else the user will not be able
to move to another page.
After selecting the requests, the user navigates to the Review and Sign page to complete the submission by clicking on the 'Continue' button.
The 'Cancel Request' button will delete any attachments or data entered for that request and return the user to the main Applicant Request page
containing the list.
The user should review the summary of requests displayed at the top of page and then scroll to the bottom of the page and enter a signature
to show confirmation. Next, the user selects the 'Pay Now' button at the bottom of the Review and Sign page.
NOTE: The 'Pay Now' button is used for request with a fee. The “Submit” button will be shown for non-fee requests.
After the payment is successfully processed, a confirmation screen appears containing payment details and a summary of the transactions processed.
NOTE: The receipt of payment will not be available after navigating away from this screen. A receipt can be retrieved in Financial Manager.
If the applicant selects "I am a former USPTO employee applying for the waiver"; an informational message will appear stating “Your complete
application for waiver must be received by OED within two years of your separation from employment by the USPTO, as required by 37 CFR §11.7(d)(4).
After two years, if you wish to become registered, you would be required to take and pass the registration examination.” is displayed.
All required fields on the Application Information page must be populated before selecting the ‘Continue’ button.
There is a 'Cancel Application' and ‘Save Draft' button at the bottom of each page to navigate between the pages.
The Employment Information page is displayed. Enter all the required employment information and click ‘Add an Office or Technology Center (TC)’
button then click 'Save'.
The 'Cancel' button will return the user to the Applicant Information page.
Once the required Employment Information is filled out, select the ‘Foregoing Information’ button to continue the process.
There is a 'Previous Section' and ‘Continue' button at the bottom of each page to navigate between the pages.
The ‘Cancel Application’ will provide ’Yes, abandon and delete this application’ button or ’Save as draft and continue at a later time’ button
for the user to select.
The ‘Save Draft’ button allows the applicant to save the application and edit it at a later time.
Enter all the required Foregoing Information fields and select the ‘Background Information’ button to continue.
Select ‘The USPTO Employment Information' to navigate between the pages.
Enter all the required Background Information fields and select the ‘Education’ button to continue the application.
Select the ‘Add a degree’ button on the Education page.
Enter all the required fields then click the ‘Save’ button.
Click ‘Continue’ button to navigate to the next page.
Upload all the required documents then select ‘Continue’.
The applicant should review the summary of the application displayed at the top of page and then scroll to the bottom of the page and enter
a signature to show confirmation.
Next, the applicant selects the 'Pay Now' button at the bottom of the Review and Sign page for application with a fee to complete the submission.
If the applicant has applied Form 158 and 158A; an informational message will appear stating that “A completed Data Sheet Form, Oath or Affirmation,
and registration fee must be received within two (2) years of the mailing date of the notice of waiver of the examination letter. 37 CFR §11.8(b) and (c).
Click 'Create new registration' to submit the forms and fees required within two (2) year time period."
Click on ‘Create new registration’ button.
If the 'Cancel submission' button is selected; a message will appear stating "Yes, abandon and delete this registration" or "Save a draft and
continue at a later time" for the applicant to select.
The ‘Save Draft’ button allows the applicant to save the registration forms and edit it at a later time.
Once the required Registration information is filled out, select the ‘Oath or declaration’ button to continue the process.
Verify your name, review, and agree the Oath or declaration then click the 'Continue’ button.
The applicant may upload optional/additional documents and click the ‘Continue' button.
There is a Previous Section' button to navigate between the pages.
The applicant should review the summary of the registration application displayed at the top of page and then scroll to the bottom of the page
and enter a signature to show confirmation.
Next, the applicant selects the 'Pay Now' button at the bottom of the Review and Sign page for application with a fee to complete the submission.
As an applicant, you are required to notify OED of any change of address.
To update your profile, please select the 'Profile' tab on the Applicant Portal page.
The Update Profile tab appears to enable the user to make any necessary updates to the user's profile and to ensure that all the required fields
are populated or checked prior to selecting the 'Update' button.
The Update My Profile confirmation window appears to communicate to the user that the profile was updated.
